Children with diabetes need consistent healthy snacks that provide sustained energy and help manage blood glucose levels. Unfortunately, kids are constantly enticed by sugary snacks that may leave them feeling fatigued or worse. To ensure that your diabetic child is eating the right kinds of foods, consider the following healthy breakfast ideas and snacking options that will promote energy and better overall health.

Start with a good breakfast

Studies have shown that when children eat the right breakfast, they tend to enjoy more energy and suffer from fewer cravings throughout the day. This is especially important for diabetic kids, who may be tempted by unhealthy treats while outside the home. That said, the wrong kind of breakfast won’t provide much benefit; so be sure to choose foods that are high in protein and fiber. Foods, such as eggs, ham, oatmeal and raisin bran, are perfect because they’re rich in protein and fiber-rich whole grains which take longer to digest. This characteristic promotes sustained energy and helps reduce cravings for longer periods of time.

After breakfast

Every kid likes to snack; however, diabetic children have to be careful when choosing what to eat. You can encourage healthier snacking by providing a wide assortment of options that will prevent your child from growing bored. Dress up vegetables and fruits with dips made from low-fat cream cheese, low-fat sour cream and peanut butter. When offering snacks, suggest comparable options. For instance, don’t suggest carrot sticks or pretzels; instead ask if they want yogurt or ice cream, grapes or apples. Whatever you do, be sure to read nutrition labels before bringing processed snacks into the home. Often, even healthy-looking processed snacks contain a surprising amount of sugar and fat.

The best of both worlds

If you can’t settle on a healthy breakfast and/or snack for your diabetic child, consider one of Mom’s Healthy Secrets cereals. Packed with nutritious whole grains, tasty fruits and hunger-curbing fiber, our cereals provide the perfect start to each morning, but can also serve as a delicious snack at different points during the day.

Almost everyone understands that they must exercise and/or consume fewer calories if they want to lose weight. Unfortunately, to accomplish their goals, many people go on crash diets that slow their metabolism and compromise their health. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, studies have shown that people who eat breakfast actually maintain healthier weights. That said, not every type of breakfast promotes weight loss. If you’re interested in shedding unwanted fat, learn how whole grain cereal can point you toward success.

Curbing appetite

When dieters skip breakfast, they must cope with hunger pains for much of the day. Often, despite their best efforts, they inevitably indulge in some sort of forbidden snack at some point, because their low blood-sugar levels leave them feeling famished and fatigued. When people eat breakfast, they tend to feel less hungry throughout the day; however, some foods curb hunger better than others.

Because whole grain foods are rich in fiber, they take much longer to digest. This not only makes the stomach feel fuller for longer periods of time; it prevents big spikes in blood-glucose levels. On the other hand, because sugary cereals cause blood-glucose levels to rapidly ascend, they promote big insulin spikes, which can leave dieters tired and susceptible to rebound hunger.

Long-term results

Although crash diets may yield quick results; more often than not, this type of weight loss doesn’t last very long. By consistently eating a nutritious whole grain breakfast, you’ll encourage effective long-term weight loss that won’t leave you feeling drained and fatigued. A bowl of Mom’s Healthy Secrets cereal will curb your appetite and provide sustained energy that will help you avoid temptations and power you through your everyday schedule.

Healthy living is based on consistent exercise and eating right; that said, many people don’t have the financial ability to stock their cabinets with a wide assortment of low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods. If you’re struggling to balance your budget with a desire to improve your health, learn how you can meet your nutritional needs without spending a fortune at the checkout counter.

Get your omega fatty acids

Studies have shown that the omega fatty acids found in fish can improve brain function and decrease the likelihood of developing certain diseases; however, the tastiest fish tends to cost a little more. Additionally, most types of fish contain troubling amounts of mercury. If you’re looking for a cheaper way to meet your daily requirement of omega fatty acids, opt for other omega-rich foods, such as avocados or winter squash. If you don’t like the taste of these foods, you can also get significant amounts of omega fatty acid by enjoying a bowl of Mom’s Healthy Secrets Omega Active cereal.

Add fiber to your diet

Studies have shown that fiber has the ability to ward off certain types of cancers, while promoting healthy weight management at the same time. Fortunately, there are a variety of fiber-rich foods available to thrifty consumers. Small servings of split peas, lentils and black beans pack an astounding amount of fiber; and since they are so fiber-rich, you don’t have to eat as much, meaning you won’t have to buy as much. Again, if you’re not a huge fan of beans and vegetables, you can always eat a fiber-rich bran cereal, such as Mom’s Healthy Secrets Fibre Fit.

Antioxidants

Exciting new research has revealed that berries contain powerful antioxidants that may have the ability to slow aging and prevent disease. Unfortunately, most berries are costly, and many consumers simply can’t afford to consistently stock their refrigerators with fresh blackberries, grapes, blueberries and strawberries. If you are interested in getting more antioxidant-rich berries into your diet, choose a healthy breakfast cereal rich with dehydrated fruits. Mom’s Healthy Secrets cereals contain delicious goji berries, raisins and strawberries that provide consumers with an affordable way to attain antioxidant protection.

A healthy cereal provides vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that promote good health. That said, even if you eat healthy, you may not be getting adequate amounts of omega-3 DHA, an important fatty acid that encourage good cardiovascular and brain health, while helping to ward off potential illness and disease. Before you eat another bowl of your usual breakfast cereal, learn how you can enhance its nutritional value by adding the right type of milk.

The power of omega-3 DHA

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that is important to people of all ages. DHA plays an important role throughout the body by acting as a major structural fat in the heart and brain. It’s also crucial for infants and pregnant women, playing a critical role in early development. Continuing scientific research is uncovering numerous unknown benefits associated with omega-3; however, most health professionals agree that the majority of people do not get enough from their everyday diets.

Organic milk with omega-3 DHA

If you eat a lot of fish, you may already get adequate amounts of omega-3 DHA; however, you could be exposing yourself to high levels of toxic mercury, as well. Whether you are worried about mercury exposure or just don’t particularly like fish, you can add omega-3 to your diet by choosing an organic milk fortified with omega-3 DHA.

On the other hand, if you don’t feel like you can afford to consistently buy this type of milk; you can also get more omega-3 by eating a bowl of Mom’s Healthy Secrets Omega Fit cereal. Just one serving holds 500mg of Omega-3, which is substantially higher than most every other cereal you’ll find at your local supermarket.

For years, we’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day; and now modern research appears to be confirming this. According to recent studies, people who eat breakfast tend to be thinner than those who don’t. Additionally, a nutritious morning meal tends to promote energy and better mental function. Unfortunately, some people eat sugary meals first thing in the morning, because they don’t like the taste of traditional nutritious foods. If you’re a relatively picky eater, consider the following healthy breakfast ideas that will support your health, while tempting your taste buds.

Oatmeal

These days, you can find a variety of nutritious organic instant oatmeal products that taste great. Packed with fiber, selenium and a host of other nutrients, this warm, whole-grain breakfast can be delicious when flavored with organic sugar, maple syrup or fresh fruit.

Whole-grain cereal

When many people think of whole-grain cereal, they picture a box filled with fibrous bran squares that taste like cardboard. Nowadays, nutritious, whole-grain cereal is available in a variety of tasty flavors. Whether you’re a finicky eater or just too busy to prepare a big healthy meal, one of Mom’s Healthy Secrets cereals can provide you with a nutritious start to your day. Flavored with organic cane sugar, organic honey and flavorful dried fruits, these cereals are perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to sacrifice taste for nutrition.

Other ideas

Many times, people can get more nutrition by “hiding” healthy foods in things they enjoy. If you like yogurt, consider mixing in a few fresh berries and some low-sugar granola. If you like eggs, add a few peppers, a small amount of broccoli and a splash of olive oil. Eat them with a slice of whole-grain toast, and you’ve got a high-protein breakfast complete with fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Lately, the dietary world has been buzzing about a potential super food that has shown the potential to fight disease and provide a significant amount of essential nutrients. If you’re interested in adding a powerful health food to your everyday diet, learn why chia seeds may be just what you’re looking for.

What are they?

Chia is the seed of the Salvia hispanica plant, which grows in southern Mexico. Prior to colonization, they were an important part of Mayan and Aztec diets. These days, the seeds are once again becoming popular, thanks to their high nutritional content and potential ability to prevent disease.

Ample nutrition

Chia seeds provide a significant amount of nutrition. A single ounce contains approximately 4 grams of protein, 11 grams of fiber and surprising amounts of essential nutrients, such as, potassium, calcium, manganese and phosphorous. They also contain several kinds of antioxidants and can be stored for long periods without spoiling.

Research also suggests that chia seeds may have the ability to prevent disease. Many believe one of the main reasons for this is because the seeds are very high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to boost brain and cardiovascular health. Numerous studies indicate that foods high in omega-3 may have the potential to prevent diabetes and certain types of cancers, and most health professionals agree that people generally do not get enough of these essential fatty acids from their everyday diets.

Other ways to get similar nutrition

Although chia seeds are taking the dietary world by storm, consumers can get similar nutrition by eating a healthy cereal. Most whole grain cereals contain comparable amounts of fiber, vitamins and minerals. That said, not many cereals can match the chia’s ability to provide omega-3. On the other hand, Mom’s Health Secrets Omega Fit cereal is a big exception. One bowl offers an amazing 500mg of omega-3, while most cereals provide far less or none at all.

Most people know that a healthy breakfast cereal can provide nutritious whole grains, fiber and important vitamins and minerals; however, few know what else they can do. If your cereal contains whole-grain oats, it may have the power to strengthen your immune system and prevent disease. Before you select just any breakfast product, learn why many consider oat-based cereals to be a super food.

Disease prevention

A Tufts University study published in The Journal of Nutrition suggests that oats contain powerful antioxidant compounds called avenanthramides, which may help stop free radicals from causing damage resulting in cardiovascular disease. Other studies have found that, because oats contain large amounts of selenium, they may have the power to decrease asthma symptoms, prevent heart disease and aid DNA repair, which is thought to reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Boosting immunity

A study led by Jonathan Reichner of the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University found that the beta-glucan found in oats significantly aids the body’s ability to fight infections. According to research, beta-glucan helps immune cells locate infections more quickly, while promoting better healing and microbial clearance.

Choosing the right healthy cereal

Although most whole-grain cereals are rich in nutrients, not all contain oats. If you’re interested in a nutritious breakfast that holds the power to enhance your immune system, choose Mom’s Healthy Secrets Fibre Fit or Vibre Berry cereals. These cereals contain a variety of whole grains, including organic rolled oats. Optimum health comes with eating a variety of whole grains. Don’t limit yourself to your usual bowl of bran cereal; get the complete spectrum of nutrition by enjoying a bowl of Mom’s tasty cereal.
